Sorry let me say that properly for this forum: @joshhall, I sent you some pics a while ago of the Lego work I done and now it needs posted but I can’t because I’m on trail. Can you post it so yinz can admire Castle Eveningland?

Ok ok you flushed me out. I’m hiking the Colorado Trail (taking a rest day in Fairplay CO). I hope to try to finish all 485 miles before I run out of time but it’s iffy bc I only have 32 days. Got married last year. Got tenure. Working on a book about human rights discourse. (I actually wrote an anecdote about the LUG in there!!!) Been getting serious about backpacking. Did just under 800 on the AT last year (got knocked off by injury). Hoping to make another attempt in next few years. As for Lego, I’ve spent about five years working on a mega castle. Will try to upload pic…

Alas my phone can’t do it and I’m hundreds of miles from my computer. Josh, I sent you some pics by text, could you post those?

Sounds like the folks that wanted a 5′ tall elephant sculpture to put outside their building.

So I just read the elephant forum and it made me laugh and miss you all even more. When they asked me to do a commissioned build here, I didn’t know what price to offer. So I called Jessica Rigney (Imagine’s former manager and current mother) and asked what they charged for a build. She gave me numbers that, um, surprised me (and the admin who were asking me!). Imagine had done a 3×3 baseplate build for the alumni center that I used for comparison. She warned me “don’t give away your time; don’t underestimate how much the parts will cost.” Oh, gosh, am I glad I listened! They had sticker shock but came around. And the cost ended up being pretty much right (text me 4192715057 and I’ll give you the final price if you like). Point being: if they don’t get sticker shock, the number probably isn’t right. People just don’t know how f’ing much this stuff costs. AND she warned me never ever to take a commission with Kragling. I didn’t know that you need special ventilation equipment to even use it. It’s a whole other skill. It’s also a volume thing: someone who does commissions for a living has the infrastructure. Someone like me has to develop a whole new set of skills and spreadsheets and stuff. Maybe not Josh, given his spreadsheet skills.

I’d love to visit. It’s a little tough right now because I’m budgeting for a year-long sabbatical (at half pay). If I’m in Pittsburgh, and can give notice, maybe folks’d like to get together? It’d probably be December…

Great build Doug! Good to hear from you. I see you used the light flesh color, perfect choice, but not easy to come by.

It’s medium dark flesh (Lego calls it Medium Nougat). I was shocked that they have just about every basic element in that color! I had to go and look at another building in an obscure corner of campus that they said had the same color of brick. There are shockingly few color photos of the building for something that burned in 1970!

@Rich: yes, some period (late 1880s) and some contemporary!

I assume a full interior to, yeah?

Heck naw. Says no in the contract. No one would see it bc it’ll be behind plexi anyway.

I’d like to see the video still-maybe a private YouTube vid or something?

    Great idea: https://youtu.be/On9m3D4ULeM

Oh, it won’t let me upload the video (too big a file). Here’s a pic of the original building for comparison.

Definitely went off the deep end by buying 16 Lego movie larry the coffee guy sets just so I could have 16 coffee cups to stage in everyone’s hands…

Are they just regular coffee cups? I find it hard to believe that you didn’t have 16 regular Lego mugs sitting around already…

Love this build though. What green is that?! It’s such a nice choice there.

Can members emeritus still buy one? Oy, that orange-ish yellow. It’s hideous, haha, but it’s perfect. No one will have any trouble finding LUG members in a crowd!

I thought about writing him a note re: pluralizing Lego when I responded to his interview questions. Now I wish I had.
    Also, regarding this sentence:

“But they usually get excited, their face lights up and they ask what I build and can they see it,’ says Cloud, 28, a Carnegie Mellon University graduate student who lives in Lawrenceville.

I read it out loud to some friends and made an addition:

“But they usually get excited, their face lights up and they ask what I build and can they see it,’ says Cloud, 28, a Carnegie Mellon University graduate student who lives in Lawrenceville, presumably alone and surrounded by cats.

Just FYI, I won’t be there tomorrow. At one point the doodle said I would. Both shifts look to be covered without me.

As far as teardown goes, I’d prefer the earlier option. I want to minimize the number of times I need to drive to WashPa. Also, regarding this Sunday, Dec 8. I am signed up for the full day, but actually need to leave at 3 sharp to make it to a volleyball game. I want to confirm that someone (and I think Ben is signed up) will be there for the remainder of the evening.

Also, I’m going to be alone from 10-1 on Sunday Dec. 8, and I’m not 100% comfortable with that, given the vigilance that this display has required. Can anyone come and keep me company? I’m such a good conversationalist…

It looks like there is still room on the backside of the row of Modular Buildings for another row of houses, or along the front of the dispay to the right of the Palace Cinema.

I’m also building a set of three of the rowhouses (from the Pet Shop set) in three different colors (sand blue, medium blue and blue) and would love to include them somewhere if there’s room. Here’s what I managed to get done yesterday on the project…

Oh, and did I mention that these houses are ALREADY MILS COMPATIBLE?!

I will be getting there as soon as I can, current goal: noon. I’m bringing my two houses, my church, all my trees, and cars. I’m going to try to MILS my houses today. I wanna contribute as much detail/landscaping as possible. Can we make sure we have that box of fences from the LUG brick? I have a use for it…

Hypothetical, there. And yeah, Tim picked a fight with the gatekeeper this afternoon, but other than that, things went pretty smoothly on the way out.

Just for the record, I don’t think Tim picked a fight with that guy; the Greenberg guy was being pretty confrontational, and I think the Greengerg guy recognized that he was in the wrong, not Tim, because he later saw fit to apologize and they both shook hands. It was a minor thing, really. I think this display went well overall. My view at this point is that we need to keep working at our planning and organization. But, everyone in the LUG feels that way. Moreover, I like you guys and have been having enough fun that I am willing to keep working at it until our LUG is running like a well-oiled machine. This event was a great warm-up for the Trolley display. I’m looking forward to refining what we have and moving forward. Also, SO MANY NEW PEOPLE CAME INTO THE FOLD. These are banner days for SCLUG!

Not sure which forum this belongs in, but I’ve been trying my hand at some brick built evergreen-type trees. (I’ve spent enough already and don’t need to be going out and buying lots of foliage!) I’ll winterize these and also add snow to the knarly trees from the medieval village. I figure it’ll look best if we mix different types of tree.

PS: THAT GINGERBREAD HOUSE IS OUTSTANDING. My fav detail are the trans-green 1×1 tiles around the walkway. I can almost taste them…sour apple maybe?

Is anyone onboard with the idea of making a full scale mockup (at least with baseplates and track) of the Greenberg display on Saturday?

Is ANYONE else planning to bring components to Josh’s house on Saturday for the purpose of planning/building the November 9th Greenberg display?

Yes, I’m onboard. I will bring my houses (even though they’re incomplete) and whatever else I can scare up (cars, trucks, trees, etc). I’m hoping to snag some black slopes from the LUG brick to finish one of the houses.

Also, if anyone has some of these, I would like to buy them or trade for them.

Both houses look awesome. I’m wodering if we should use them in the Winter Village section rather than the Town section. They would be great for the houses from which the children are picked up by the Polar Express. Doug, what do you think?

I have no objection whatsoever. My goal is just to provide stuff to help fill out your vision.

Are there any buildings or vehicles that you think would be particularly valuable for a snow-covered North Pole, a wintry forest or to a non-snow-covered village?

I’ll bet I can rustle up a few cars and pickup trucks.

Everyone who plans to contribute, please reply in this thread and let me know what you are contributing and how many baseplates you need.

I’ve got two LARGE houses pretty much built. I think together they can occupy a 4×2 section (4 wide by 2 deep), which would put me at 8 baseplates total. If both houses were placed close to one another, I think I could condense them down to a single 3×2 baseplate block (3 wide by 2 deep). I will also have the medieval church (I’ll try to add a few modern details), but it looks a little too small next to my houses…

I’ve already posted my first draft of the Georgian. Below is the Dutch Colonial that I’m working on.
